Senator Stevens Realises the Importance of Rights and Justice

A federal jury Monday found Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska guilty of corruption. Commenting on his conviction, Stevens said in a prepared statement “I am obviously disappointed in the verdict but not surprised given the repeated instances of prosecutorial misconduct in this case, I will fight this unjust verdict with every ounce of energy I have.” Before going on to ask Alaskans and his Senate colleagues to “stand with me as I pursue my rights.”

Prosecutorial misconduct? Unjust verdicts? Rights?

This strikes me a pretty odd talk from a man who, until recently, didn’t seem to give much of a damn about such concepts. Lets look over his voting record on some issues directly relevant to rights and justice (thanks to ontheissues.org).

  • Voted NO on requiring FISA court warrant to monitor US-to-foreign calls. (Feb 2008)
  • Voted YES on removing need for FISA warrant for wiretapping abroad. (Aug 2007)
  • Voted NO on preserving habeas corpus for Guantanamo detainees. (Sep 2006)
  • Voted NO on requiring CIA reports on detainees & interrogation methods. (Sep 2006)
  • Voted YES on reauthorizing the PATRIOT Act. (Mar 2006)
  • Voted YES on extending the PATRIOT Act’s wiretap provision. (Dec 2005)

Now let’s just hope the good citizens of Alaska are smart enough to kick this corrupt idiot out of office.
